Long before organized religions, humanity sought wisdom through nature, dreams, spirits, ancestors, and altered states of consciousness. Explore one of the oldest spiritual traditions on Earth.
Among humanity's oldest practices, shamanism is not a single religion but a family of techniques — a set of methods for entering altered states of consciousness to interact with a layered spirit world on behalf of a community.
The word shaman entered Western scholarship via Russian explorers who encountered the šaman of the Evenki (Tungus) people of Siberia — a figure who fell into ecstatic trance and made spirit journeys. Anthropologists later debated whether this Siberian term should be applied globally. Scholars like Mircea Eliade, whose 1951 Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy defined the field, identified broadly similar practices across Siberia, the Americas, Central Asia, and Korea. Critics note the risk of flattening real cultural diversity. Today most researchers treat shamanism as a functional category: wherever a practitioner mediates between ordinary and non-ordinary reality to heal, divine, or guide the dead, the comparison is illuminating — without erasing local distinctiveness.
At its core, shamanism rests on three intertwined ideas: that nature is alive and imbued with intelligence (animism); that the cosmos is structured in multiple layers — typically an Upper World, a Middle World, and a Lower World — connected by a central axis (axis mundi, often imagined as a World Tree or cosmic mountain); and that a trained practitioner can consciously travel between these layers to retrieve knowledge, healing power, or lost soul-fragments. The shaman does not merely pray to spirits — the shaman goes to them.
The shaman is the great specialist in the human soul; he alone "sees" it, for he knows its "form" and its destiny. Mircea Eliade — Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, 1951
Long before the first cities, the first crops, or the first written words, some members of hunter-gatherer bands appear to have taken a special role: crossing between the everyday world and unseen realms. Archaeological evidence — cautiously interpreted — suggests these practices may stretch back forty thousand years or more.
The word shaman entered European languages from the Tungusic šaman of Siberia, but scholars recognize analogous figures — healers, visionaries, intermediaries with spirits — across every inhabited continent. The question of origins is not simply historical curiosity: it touches on when and how our ancestors first developed symbolic thought, ritual behavior, and a sense of an invisible world alongside the visible one.
Important caveat: interpreting prehistoric evidence for spiritual practices is inherently speculative. We cannot directly know the beliefs or intentions of people who left no written records. What follows presents the most widely discussed scholarly hypotheses — not settled facts. Archaeologists and anthropologists continue to debate these interpretations vigorously.
“The evidence suggests that by the time modern humans spread out of Africa and into Europe and Asia, they already possessed the fully modern capacity for symbolic thought — a capacity that makes shamanism possible.” — Scholarly synthesis (after Mithen, Lewis-Williams, Winkelman)
Every inhabited continent has developed its own forms of shamanic practice — distinct languages, cosmologies, and practitioners, yet sharing certain deep structures: the mediator between worlds, the healer who journeys, the voice that speaks for spirits and ancestors.
The traditions below are living cultures, not museum artifacts. They are varied, contested, evolving, and not interchangeable. This map is an educational introduction, not an authoritative or exhaustive survey. The shaman is not a type, but a role — one that every culture has found necessary, because every culture has faced the unknown and needed someone willing to go first.
Not everyone who hears the call can answer it. Not everyone who answers it survives unchanged. The making of a shaman is one of humanity's most demanding spiritual transformations — a death of the old self, and a difficult return.
The structural resemblance between shamanic initiation and Joseph Campbell's "monomyth" — the hero's journey of departure, descent, trials, transformation, and return bearing a boon for the community — is often noted by comparative mythologists. Campbell drew partly on Eliade's research. It is worth holding this comparison carefully: the monomyth is an interpretive lens, a pattern that later scholars abstracted from thousands of diverse stories. Shamanic initiation as lived in specific communities is not a narrative archetype — it is a concrete process embedded in a particular cosmology, social role, and ecological context. The comparison illuminates resonances, but should not flatten the differences.
What emerges from this transformation — if the candidate survives it — is not a priest or a theologian, but something more specific: a specialist in navigating boundaries. The healed shaman now understands illness from the inside; the traveler between worlds has crossed the threshold and can therefore guide others. In this sense, the shamanic journey is not simply a qualification ritual — it is the source of the shaman's authority and empathy alike.
「The shaman is above all a sick man who has been cured, who has succeeded in curing himself.」 — Mircea Eliade, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, 1951
In many shamanic traditions, reality is layered: above, below, and here. The shaman is the rare traveller who can move between all three.
「The shaman descends not to be lost in darkness, but to bring back what is hidden — the soul-fragment, the lost name, the forgotten power.」 Paraphrase of a widespread shamanic teaching across Siberian and North American traditions
Across every inhabited continent, animals have been teachers, ancestors, guardians, and messengers between the human world and the spirit world. Their symbolism is not universal — it is deeply rooted in specific ecologies, histories, and ceremonial traditions.
Animals are not our subordinates. They are our older relatives who have been here longer and know the land more deeply. Paraphrase of a recurring theme in Indigenous ecological knowledge across many traditions
Before writing, before cities, before organized religion — there were dreams. Every culture on Earth has treated the sleeping mind as a doorway: to ancestors, to spirits, to warnings, to healing, to the sacred.
For shamanic traditions worldwide, dreams are not merely the brain rehearsing memories. They are real journeys: the dreamer's soul — or a wandering part of it — leaves the body to visit the spirit world, receive teachings, diagnose illness, or encounter the dead. Among many Siberian and Central Asian peoples, a shaman's calling often arrives first in dreams: a spirit comes, commands, or wounds the future shaman, marking them for their vocation. The dream is the original appointment letter.
Vision quests — extended periods of fasting, solitude, and prayer in the wilderness — are one of the most widespread methods for inducing sacred visions. Among numerous Plains nations (including Lakota, Crow, and others), the hanbleceya — commonly translated as "crying for a vision" — involves a young person going alone onto a high place, fasting for several days, and opening themselves to receive a vision that may guide their entire life. These practices are living, sacred traditions; they are described here with deep respect and not as techniques for outsiders to replicate.
Dream incubation was also codified in ancient Mediterranean traditions. Ill patients of ancient Greece would sleep in the sanctuary of Asclepius — the god of medicine — hoping that the deity would appear and prescribe a cure. Dream oracles operated at sites like Epidaurus, Delphi, and Lebadea. Similar practices appear in ancient Egypt, where priests slept in temples to receive divine guidance, and in ancient Mesopotamian texts that classify dreams by type and recommend ritual responses.
Future shamans are often "elected" by spirits through illness-visions. Dreams of dismemberment, death, and rebirth mark the initiation — the candidate is taken apart and reassembled with new bones, sometimes made of iron or crystal.
The hanbleceya ("crying for a vision") is a living, sacred tradition: solitude, fasting, prayer on the land, lasting several days. A vision received may become a lifelong guiding relationship. Described here with respect — not a how-to. hanbleceya(「哭求异象」)是一种鲜活的神圣传统:在大地上独处、禁食、祈祷,持续数日。
Sanctuaries of Asclepius received thousands of pilgrims seeking healing through sacred sleep. Ancient Egypt's "seers" slept in temple sanctuaries for divine instruction. Dreams were classified, interpreted, and acted upon through elaborate ritual systems.
The Dreaming (or Dreamtime) is not sleep — it is the foundational reality underlying and permeating the physical world: the creative epoch of the ancestors, encoded in story, song, ceremony, and land. Dreams connect individuals to this enduring sacred substrate.
"The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the psyche, opening into that cosmic night which was psyche long before there was any ego-consciousness." C. G. Jung — "The Meaning of Psychology for Modern Man" (1934)
Cultures worldwide have recognized and cultivated the ability to become aware within a dream — and to act deliberately in that state. Tibetan Buddhist dream yoga treats the lucid dream as a training ground for recognizing the nature of mind and preparing for death. In many shamanically influenced traditions, the skilled dreamer travels lucidly to heal, retrieve lost souls, or receive teachings unavailable in waking life.
Across Mesopotamia, ancient China, the Hebrew Bible, the Islamic tradition, and indigenous cultures worldwide, certain dreams were understood as messages from beyond the ordinary self — prophecies, warnings, or diagnoses of spiritual imbalance. Shamans frequently interpret community members' dreams as part of healing practice: a spirit speaks through the dreamer's imagery; reading the symbol correctly can restore balance. The shaman is often the community's dream-reader.
Modern neuroscience and cognitive psychology offer a complementary — not competing — lens. During REM sleep, the brain engages in memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and pattern integration across experiences. Dreams may be how the brain "tests" simulations of social and physical scenarios, searches for unexpected connections, or processes unresolved emotional material. Far from "mere random noise," recent research (Hobson, Walker, Stickgold) suggests that REM sleep and dreaming support creativity, threat rehearsal, and emotional memory processing. Shamanic traditions and cognitive science agree on at least one thing: what happens in dreams matters.
None of this reduces dreams to "just" biology. The cognitive account does not explain why certain dream images arrive across cultures and millennia bearing similar emotional weight — the great serpent, the flight above the earth, the luminous stranger, the return of the beloved dead. Jungian depth psychology calls these archetypal patterns; many indigenous traditions call them messages. What both share is the refusal to dismiss the dream as noise. The question of what is speaking — synapse or spirit, or both — remains genuinely open.
Eliade called shamanism a "technique of ecstasy." Across cultures and millennia, practitioners have entered altered states — through rhythm, breath, dance, fasting, and sustained attention — to seek knowledge beyond ordinary waking awareness.
"The shaman specializes in a trance during which his soul is believed to leave his body and ascend to the sky or descend to the underworld." — Mircea Eliade, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, 1951

Across cultures and millennia, the shaman has served as healer — not merely of the body, but of the soul, the community, and the cosmic order. Shamanic healing is, at its heart, the art of restoring balance where balance has been lost.

In virtually every shamanic tradition worldwide, illness is understood not only as a physical state but as a disruption — a break in the fabric of relationships between a person, their community, the spirit world, and the broader cosmos. The shaman's task is diagnostic as much as remedial: to perceive where that rupture lies and to enact rituals that restore wholeness.
Four major dimensions of shamanic healing appear across scholarly literature: spiritual healing (soul retrieval, removal of intrusive spirits), ritual healing (ceremony, song, drumming, sacred objects), community healing (the social and psychological function of collective ritual), and analytical perspectives from psychology and anthropology that interpret these practices through the lens of meaning, belief, and social order.
In many traditions, illness is caused by soul-loss — a fragment of the self becomes separated through trauma, fear, or spirit intrusion. The shaman journeys to the spirit world to retrieve the lost soul-part and reintegrate it. Documented among Siberian, Mongolian, Amazonian, Korean, and Native American traditions alike.
Ritual creates a structured container for transformation. Drums induce altered states; songs carry healing intent; herbs, smoke, and sacred objects mark transitions between ordinary and non-ordinary reality. The ritual frame itself communicates to participants — and to the community — that healing is underway.
Anthropologists emphasise that shamanic healing is rarely a private transaction. The ritual brings the community together, bearing witness, chanting, and affirming shared values and cosmological beliefs. This collective mobilisation provides the ill person with visible social support — recognised by social psychology as itself a powerful factor in wellbeing.
Psychologists and anthropologists offer complementary frameworks: the meaning-response (Moerman, 2002) suggests that ritual healing works partly through the patient's belief in the healer and the meaning the ritual provides. Anthropologists such as Lévi-Strauss and Turner showed that healing restores the symbolic and social order — resolving the patient's place within the community and cosmos.

Tungusic and Mongolian shamans (böö) perform ceremonies to extract illness-causing spirits or retrieve lost souls. The shaman enters trance through drumming, negotiates with spirits, and returns with diagnostic and healing knowledge.
Amazonian healers (curanderos, ayahuasceros) combine sacred plant preparations with song (ícaros) to navigate the spirit world and identify the origin of illness. The diagnosis involves perceiving cosmic imbalances, and treatment restores the patient's relationship with the living forest.
Korean mudang (shamans) conduct elaborate gut ceremonies to mediate between the living and ancestral spirits. Illness is often understood as a consequence of unresolved ancestral grievance. The healing ritual restores peace between generations and resolves social-familial tensions.
Andean and Mesoamerican traditions describe susto (soul fright) as an illness caused by sudden shock that dislodges the soul. Healers perform rituals at the site of the fright, calling the soul back through prayer, herb bundles, sweeping the body with medicinal plants, and reaffirming the patient's social identity.
Modern psychology has offered several frameworks for understanding why shamanic healing rituals appear to have measurable effects on participants' wellbeing. These interpretations do not debunk shamanic healing — they explore complementary explanatory layers alongside the indigenous frameworks themselves.
Daniel Moerman's concept of the “meaning response” — sometimes loosely called the placebo response — recognises that the body responds not just to physical treatments but to the meaning, expectation, and symbolism surrounding a healing encounter. Elaborate shamanic ritual maximises the meaning field available to the patient.
Decades of social psychology research confirm that perceived social support is strongly associated with health outcomes. The shamanic healing ceremony publicly mobilises the patient's social network, signals communal care, and reinforces the patient's sense of belonging — all recognised wellbeing factors independent of any metaphysical claims.
Illness disrupts a person's life narrative. Anthropologist Arthur Kleinman's explanatory model framework shows that making sense of illness — framing it within a coherent cosmological story — itself promotes recovery by restoring agency and meaning. The shamanic diagnosis provides precisely such a narrative.
Both the shaman and, often, the patient enter altered states (through drumming, song, plant medicines, fasting, or darkness). Research by Winkelman and others in neuroanthropology suggests these states engage integrative brain functions and may facilitate resolution of traumatic memory and emotional reprocessing — a neurological correlate explored in academic literature.
The shaman's drum is at once a steed, a boat, a map of the cosmos, and a vehicle of consciousness — beaten into another world and back again.
Across Siberia, Central Asia, the Americas, and the Arctic, the frame drum (a shallow, one-sided drum, often with a painted membrane) has served as the shaman's most sacred tool. Mircea Eliade noted that the Tungus word for shaman's drum literally translates as "steed," while in many Evenk and Buryat traditions the drum is painted with cosmological diagrams — the three worlds (upper, middle, lower), spirit helpers, and the path of the soul's journey. The drum is consecrated in elaborate ceremonies; it is understood not as an instrument but as a living being, sometimes addressed directly. When a drum is broken, the shaman may be said to be spiritually wounded.
Beyond the frame drum, the shaman's sonic palette spans the jaw harp (khomus/vargan — its buzzing overtones widely regarded as a bridge to the spirit world), rattles of bone, seed pods, or metal; bells sewn into the shaman's robe; and overtone or throat singing (Tuvan khoomei, Mongolian khöömii), in which a single performer produces multiple simultaneous pitches. Ethnomusicologists and neuroscientists studying rhythmic entrainment have noted that steady drumbeats in the range of 4–7 Hz — the theta-wave band — correlate with hypnagogic imagery and altered states, lending empirical weight to what practitioners have always known: sound is a technology of consciousness.

The dead do not leave. In societies across the globe — from Siberian tundra to East Asian ancestral halls, from West African compound shrines to Andean mountain tombs — the departed remain members of the community, their presence maintained through ritual, memory, and the shaman's mediating voice.
Ancestor veneration is among the most widespread spiritual practices in recorded human history. Anthropologist Jack Goody observed that some form of ancestor cult exists in nearly every known society, though its expression ranges from daily household offerings to elaborate annual festivals spanning entire national calendars. The core idea is consistent: death does not sever kinship. The ancestors become a different kind of person — one who now inhabits a liminal realm between the living community and the wider spirit world.
In Siberian and Central Asian shamanic traditions — among the Evenki, Buryat, and Yakut peoples — the shaman (Evenki: šaman) holds a singular role as communicator with ancestral spirits. When a community member falls ill, suffers misfortune, or faces a critical life transition, the shaman may journey to the realm of the dead to consult a deceased elder, retrieve a stolen soul, or negotiate with an ancestor spirit that has become restless. These traditions describe the ancestral realm not as paradise or punishment, but as a parallel community mirroring the living one — with its own social hierarchies, needs, and grievances (Mircea Eliade, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, 1951).
East Asian ancestor veneration — rooted in Chinese practice (祭祖, jì zǔ) and flowing into Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese tradition — developed into one of the most institutionalized forms of ancestral piety in world history. Confucian philosophy formalized it as a moral duty: filial piety (xiào, 孝) extends beyond death. The deceased require offerings of food, incense, paper money, and the recitation of their names so that their existence in the spirit realm is dignified and sustained. The Qingming Festival (清明节, observed in early April) is perhaps the world's most widely practiced ancestral observance — tens of millions travel to tend graves, burn offerings, and maintain the unbroken thread of family memory across generations. Japan's Obon festival (お盆, mid-August) similarly welcomes ancestor spirits home with lanterns, dance, and offerings before guiding them gently back.
In West and Central African traditions, ancestral spirits (known variously as egúngún in Yoruba culture, mizimu among the Tonga, or sasa in the framework John Mbiti outlined in African Religions and Philosophy, 1969) occupy a structurally vital social position. They are the «living dead» — those recently passed who are still remembered by name, and thus remain persons rather than anonymous forces. The community maintains them through regular libation, naming in prayer, and consultation through specialist diviners and spirit mediums who occupy a role closely analogous to the Siberian shaman. When misfortune strikes, the first question asked is often: have the ancestors been properly honored?
「The dead are not dead.」 They have merely gone beyond the river. As long as a name is spoken, a spirit lives. — Birago Diop, Senegalese poet, inspired by Wolof ancestral tradition
Before philosophy, before scripture, before history — there was story. Across every culture on Earth, shamanic cosmologies generated the oldest human answers to the deepest questions: How did the world begin? Who carries fire across the void? What holds the sky from falling? These myths are not primitive science but living maps of meaning, encoded in image and narrative.
Anthropologist Mircea Eliade observed that shamanic mythology is not merely decorative narrative but a sacred charter — a living account of how the world came to be structured the way it is, and therefore how the shaman's work of navigating, restoring, and renewing that structure makes sense (The Sacred and the Profane, 1957). Creation myths, trickster tales, sacred animal stories, and world-tree cosmographies are the conceptual infrastructure of shamanic practice: the shaman does not simply journey to the spirit world — they journey within a detailed and storied cosmos whose geography was established «in the beginning.»
Creation mythology takes three great forms across shamanic cultures. The cosmic egg — found in Finno-Ugric, Hindu (the Hiranyagarbha, golden womb of the Rigveda), Daoist, and Orphic Greek traditions — posits the world hatched from a primordial ovoid. The earth diver — widespread across Native North American peoples, Siberian Buryat and Yakut traditions, and Central Asia — features a diving bird or animal descending into the primal waters to retrieve a grain of mud from which the world is formed. The world from sacrifice — as in the Norse slaying of Ymir, the Vedic Purusha, or the Babylonian Tiamat — derives earth, sky, and sea from the dismembered body of a primordial being. In all three, the shaman's ability to navigate between worlds is implicitly rooted in the moment of their creation: the layers of reality were always crossable.
The trickster-creator is among the most widespread mythic figures in shamanic tradition. Among the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast — the Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian, and others — Raven (Yéil in Tlingit) is simultaneously the creator of the world, the thief of light, and an insatiable, bumbling transformer whose desires and mistakes are structurally generative: the world is the way it is because Raven was hungry, curious, or deceived. In Plains and Great Basin North American traditions, Coyote fills the same structural role. The trickster is crucial to shamanic cosmology because it embodies a truth about cosmic order: the boundaries between categories — sacred/profane, alive/dead, human/animal, day/night — are not fixed walls but permeable membranes, subject to negotiation, transformation, and occasional transgression. The shaman's entire practice depends on exactly this permeability.
The myth is the public dream and the dream is the private myth. — Joseph Campbell, Myths to Live By (1972)约瑟夫·坎贝尔,《活出神话》(1972年)
At the center of the shamanic cosmos stands a tree — its roots drinking from the underworld, its trunk rooted in this world, its crown touching the heavens. It is not merely a symbol. It is the road itself: the axis along which the shaman climbs, descends, and returns between worlds.
The image of a great tree connecting the realms of existence appears, with remarkable consistency, across cultures separated by thousands of miles and millennia. Mircea Eliade, in his landmark study Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy (1951), identified the World Tree — what he called the Axis Mundi — as one of the universal structures of shamanic cosmology. Every tradition gives the tree a different name and a different character, yet the logic is identical: the cosmos is vertically organized, the tree is its spine, and the shaman is the being capable of climbing it.
In Norse cosmology, Yggdrasil — an immense ash tree — stands at the center of the nine worlds. Its three great roots reach into the realm of the dead (Hel), the land of the frost giants (Jötunheimr), and the spring of wisdom guarded by Mímir. In its branches, an eagle; gnawing at its roots, the serpent Níðhöggr. The god Odin himself hung from Yggdrasil for nine days and nights to receive the runes — a mythic reflection of the shaman's ordeal on the tree, trading suffering for knowledge that bridges worlds (Edda of Snorri Sturluson, c. 1220 CE).
The Siberian and Turkic shamanic traditions from which the word shaman itself derives carry perhaps the most technically developed accounts of the World Tree. Among the Evenki, Buryat, Yakut, and Altai peoples, a sacred birch (šaman der in Evenki; tüuru or baї terek in Altai Turkic traditions) stands at the navel of the earth, its roots in the lower world and its branches in the upper. The shaman's séance often involves a ritual birch with notches cut as steps — a physical ladder that the shaman's spirit ascends during the ceremony. The drum, frequently described as a «horse» or «boat,» carries the shaman along the tree between worlds (V. N. Basilov, ed., Nomads of Eurasia, 1989).
The Maya Ceiba (Yaxché, the «first tree,» the «green tree») is the World Tree of Mesoamerican cosmology — its roots descending into Xibalba (the underworld), its trunk passing through the earthly realm of daily human life, and its great spreading crown sheltering the thirteen heavens. The Ceiba was so sacred that even after the Spanish conquest, Maya communities continued to plant ceiba trees at the center of new towns — a cosmological memory encoded in town-planning. The king himself, in Classic Maya rulership, was identified with the World Tree and dressed in its imagery during accession ceremonies (Linda Schele and David Freidel, A Forest of Kings, 1990).
In the Hindu philosophical tradition, the Ashvattha (sacred fig, or Ficus religiosa) appears in the Bhagavad Gita (chapter 15) as an inverted tree — roots upward, branches downward — growing from the imperishable Brahman toward the manifest world. This inversion is cosmologically significant: the true origin is above, in the unmanifest; the world we see is the tree's shadow cast downward. The shaman's ascent reverses the fall, climbing back toward the source. The Buddha's enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree — another Ficus religiosa — is understood by scholars of comparative religion as drawing from this same deep well of axis imagery (Wendy Doniger, The Hindus: An Alternative History, 2009).
The shaman's tree is the cosmos made climbable — the universe given a spine, so that a human being may travel it from root to crown and back again, carrying medicine between worlds. — after Mircea Eliade, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy
Long before the science of ecology had a name, many indigenous communities maintained detailed, practical, and deeply relational knowledge of the living world — its cycles, its limits, its interconnections. The shaman served, among other roles, as a living interface between the human community and the more-than-human world.
The relationship between shamanic traditions and the natural world is not merely symbolic or spiritual in the abstract sense. It is grounded in millennia of observation, encoded in ritual, and reinforced by systems of reciprocal obligation that regulated how people hunted, fished, farmed, and moved through landscapes. Anthropologist Robin Wall Kimmerer, drawing on her Potawatomi heritage alongside her training as a botanist, describes this as a «grammar of animacy» — a way of knowing the world in which plants, animals, rivers, and seasons are not objects but persons, with agency, gifts, and expectations (Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass, 2013).
Contemporary researchers have developed the concept of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) to describe the body of understanding that indigenous and local communities have accumulated through long-term, place-based relationships with their environments. TEK is not static lore but an evolving, empirically grounded system — one that has proven capable of detecting ecological changes, managing fisheries sustainably, and preserving biodiversity across timescales far beyond the reach of modern scientific monitoring (Fikret Berkes, Sacred Ecology, 1999). The shaman, as custodian of a community's cosmological and ecological knowledge, was a critical node in this system.
It is important to avoid romanticizing these relationships. Many indigenous communities did experience ecological disruptions, overexploitation of local resources, and environmental change — human communities everywhere are embedded in nature's pressures, not exempt from them. What shamanic and indigenous ecological frameworks consistently demonstrate, however, is a structural attentiveness to reciprocity and limit: the idea that taking from the land requires giving back, that animals and plants have their own standing, and that the community's long-term survival depends on maintaining the balance rather than maximizing any single resource. These are not mystical abstractions but functional principles with empirical consequences.
「The land is the real teacher. All we need as students is mindfulness.」 Reciprocity is not sentiment — it is the operating logic of the living world.
When Carl Jung descended into his own unconscious — documenting visions, mythic figures, and transformative encounters — he was following a path that shamans had mapped for millennia. Depth psychology and shamanic tradition have never entirely been strangers.
Carl Gustav Jung (1875–1961), the Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology, spent his career charting the deep structures of the human mind. Where his teacher Sigmund Freud focused on the personal unconscious — memories, repressed desires, individual history — Jung proposed something far wider: a collective unconscious, a layer of the psyche shared across all human beings, populated not by individual memories but by universal patterns of experience he called archetypes. These are not inherited ideas, Jung was careful to clarify, but inherited predispositions: tendencies to perceive, feel, and respond to certain fundamental human situations — birth, death, the hero's quest, the encounter with the divine — in recognizable, cross-culturally recurring ways. His ideas are interpretive frameworks, not empirical facts, and have been debated vigorously within psychology; nonetheless they remain profoundly influential in culture, literature, and comparative mythology.
Jung encountered shamanic traditions through anthropological literature and through his own inner work, documented in the posthumously published Red Book (Liber Novus, written 1914–1930, published 2009). In those pages he recorded waking visions — descents to underworld-like spaces, encounters with figures resembling spirit guides, confrontations with shadow-selves — experiences structurally similar to the shamanic journey. He was not the first to notice the parallel: Mircea Eliade's Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy (1951) made the comparison systematic, reading the shaman's initiatory dismemberment, journey to the spirit world, and return as universal mythic patterns that Jung's analytical framework could illuminate. The comparison has limitations — shamanic traditions are embedded in specific cultures, cosmologies, and social functions that psychological reduction can flatten — but the resonances are genuine and worth exploring carefully.
The concept of the wounded healer — a figure whose own suffering equips them to heal others — is one of the most productive bridges between Jungian thought and shamanism. In most shamanic traditions worldwide, the shaman is called not through privilege or choice, but through crisis: severe illness, visions that cannot be suppressed, near-death experiences, psychological breakdown. The spirits choose the shaman precisely through affliction. Jung observed the same dynamic in the psyche: the analyst who has genuinely confronted their own shadow — their repressed, unlived, or feared aspects — gains a depth of understanding inaccessible to one who has not made that descent. Henri Ellenberger, in The Discovery of the Unconscious (1970), described this as the creative illness: a period of profound inner suffering followed by breakthrough insight and an expanded capacity to accompany others through difficulty.
Jung's concept of individuation — the lifelong process by which a person integrates the disparate, often conflicting parts of the psyche into a coherent whole — bears a structural resemblance to the shamanic initiation journey. Individuation is not a comfortable process: it requires confronting the Shadow (the disowned parts of oneself), integrating the Anima or Animus (the inner feminine or masculine), encountering the Wise Old One or Great Mother (archetypal guides), and ultimately relating to the Self — the organizing centre of the total psyche, which Jung distinguished from the ego. The shaman's journey follows a strikingly parallel arc: death of the old self, dismemberment, descent, encounter with spirit helpers and adversaries, ascent, and return as a transformed being capable of mediating between worlds. Both paths share the insight that the deepest healing requires the healer to have undergone a genuine transformation — not merely acquired technique.
「The meeting with oneself is, at first, the meeting with one's own shadow.」 — Carl Gustav Jung, Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious (1934/1954) — an interpretive framework, not empirical doctrine卡尔·古斯塔夫·荣格,《原型与集体无意识》(1934/1954年)——解释性框架,非经验教义
It is important to approach this comparison honestly. Jung drew heavily on the anthropological literature of his era, which often reflected colonial-era assumptions and romanticized non-Western traditions. The idea that shamanism is a «primitive» precursor to psychology — or that indigenous cosmologies can be reduced to psychological symbols — is problematic and has been rightly criticized by scholars including Paul Radin and, more recently, by Indigenous scholars themselves. The value of the comparison lies not in flattening shamanism into psychology, but in noticing genuine structural resonances between two traditions that, from very different starting points, both arrived at the insight that the inner life is inhabited by autonomous figures, that descent into darkness is necessary for wholeness, and that the healer must be, in some profound sense, healed.
Why do humans — across every culture and era — seek states beyond ordinary waking awareness? The shaman's trance is not an aberration but an amplification: a deliberate navigation of the full spectrum of human consciousness, from focused attention to the dissolution of the ordinary self–world boundary.
Human consciousness is not a single fixed state. Neuroscience describes a landscape of modes — ordinary waking cognition, focused attention, hypnagogic drift, deep sleep, dreaming, flow states, meditation-induced absorption, and the more radical restructuring of self-referential processing that occurs in deep trance and mystical experience. What all of these share is a shift in activity within what researchers call the default mode network (DMN): the brain's midline cortical system associated with self-referential thinking, narrative self-construction, mind-wandering, and the sense of being a separate «I» embedded in a continuous timeline.
Studies using neuroimaging have found that experienced meditators in deep absorption states, and participants in controlled psilocybin trials, show marked reductions in DMN activity and connectivity — a pattern correlated with the phenomenological reports of dissolved ego-boundaries, expanded presence, and the sense of unity with the surrounding world that practitioners across shamanic, Buddhist, Hindu, Sufi, and Christian mystical traditions have described for thousands of years. Cognitive anthropologist Michael Winkelman (2010) argues that the shamanic trance represents a «integrative mode of consciousness» — a state in which ordinarily separated neural networks enter into a more globally integrated phase, enabling unusual pattern recognition, emotional processing, and symbolic creativity.
The cross-cultural universality of altered-state seeking is itself a phenomenon demanding explanation. Psychologist Abraham Maslow observed a class of «peak experiences» — moments of profound joy, unity, and meaning — that occurred spontaneously across all cultures and were not tied to any particular belief system. Anthropologist Weston La Barre proposed that the capacity for trance and vision was part of the original cognitive toolkit that spread with early Homo sapiens out of Africa, making shamanism not a particular religion but a recurring expression of basic human cognitive architecture. What drives this seeking? Scholars offer several candidate answers — none mutually exclusive.
These four answers — meaning, healing, social bonding, and inner exploration — are presented here as open candidates, not as a settled debate. The study of consciousness remains one of the deepest open questions in science and philosophy. What the shamanic record contributes is a vast, cross-cultural archive of first-person phenomenology — thousands of years of documented human experience navigating non-ordinary states, with sophisticated interpretive frameworks developed within specific cultural contexts. This archive is increasingly being taken seriously by consciousness researchers precisely because its patterns recur so reliably across such diverse times and places.
「The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.」 Ordinary waking consciousness is only the shore. The shaman has always known there is an ocean. — Alan Watts, The Wisdom of Insecurity (1951), on consciousness and change艾伦·瓦茨,《不安全感的智慧》(1951年),论意识与变化
Long before scripture was written or doctrine codified, humans navigated the sacred through direct, embodied, experiential encounter — with nature, with spirits, with the unknown. World religions grew from that same root, branching into vastly different forms. No tradition holds a monopoly on meaning. Shamanism and the great world faiths are distinct, yet share surprising depths.
The word «religion» comes from the Latin religio — to bind, or to bind again. Something in the human mind repeatedly reaches toward what transcends the ordinary: the sacred, the ancestral, the cosmos. Anthropologists note that no human society has yet been documented that entirely lacks spiritual or religious practice. Shamanism is often described as «proto-religious» — not because it is primitive, but because it carries the oldest surviving form of the human impulse to engage with unseen worlds. The great organized religions — Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, indigenous traditions worldwide — each crystallized that impulse into specific cosmologies, moral frameworks, canonical texts, institutional forms, and ritual systems. They differ enormously. Yet certain themes recur across all of them, including shamanism: a layered cosmos; the existence of intermediaries; the possibility of transformation; the sacred character of nature and sound; and the belief that the living and the dead are not fully separated.
Taoism (Dàojiào, 道教) is perhaps the world faith most visibly infused with shamanic resonances. Its foundational concept, the Dào (道, the Way), is not a personal deity but an ineffable, pervasive natural order — structurally analogous to the animistic fabric of shamanic cosmology. Daoist ritual specialists (daoshi, 道士) perform ceremonies that include spirit-mediation, exorcism, healing, and negotiation with a vast pantheon of spirits — functions strikingly parallel to the shaman's. The ancient Chinese tradition of wu (巫) — ritual specialists who danced, entered trance, and communicated with spirits — is widely regarded by scholars such as Michael Loewe and K.C. Chang as a direct precursor to both Daoist ritual and Chinese popular religion. The shamanic substrate was never erased; it was institutionalized.
Buddhism presents a fascinating case study in religious layering. Siddhartha Gautama's original teaching — focused on suffering, impermanence, the path to liberation, and the dissolution of ego — contains no shamanic cosmology in the strict sense. Yet as Buddhism spread from India to Tibet, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia, it encountered living shamanic traditions everywhere. In Tibet, the indigenous Bon religion — itself a sophisticated shamanic system with sky-burials, oracular priests, and spirit-journeys — was not simply replaced by Buddhism. It merged with it. The result is Vajrayāna Buddhism (金刚乘): a tradition that retained spirit-intermediaries (protector deities, dharmapālas), elaborate ritual, and trance-oracle practice alongside the philosophical core of the Dharma. Tibetan oracle monks (kuten) still enter possession trance as part of formal religious consultation — a living shamanic practice within one of the world's major Buddhist schools.
Hinduism — arguably the world's oldest continuously practiced living religion — is itself a vast, pluralistic fabric that encompasses monism, polytheism, devotion, philosophy, ritual, yoga, and much more. Its Vedic roots reach back into the Indo-Iranian steppe cultures of the second millennium BCE, where archaeologists and scholars such as Wendy Doniger and Jan Gonda have noted structural parallels with Central Asian shamanism: the soma ritual (a trance-inducing sacred drink), the fire priests (Agni mediation), the celestial journey of the atman. Hindu folk traditions throughout South and Southeast Asia retain healing specialists, spirit-mediums, and oracle practices that function in ways very close to shamanic traditions — the devadasi, the ojha, and the village bhumihar represent living continuities that scholars rarely attribute to «official» Hinduism but that are central to how hundreds of millions of people actually practice their faith.
Indigenous traditions — from the Lakota Sun Dance to Andean curanderismo, from West African Vodun to Australian Aboriginal Songlines — are not simply «pre-religious.» Many are highly sophisticated cosmological systems with their own philosophical depth, ethical frameworks, ritual precision, and epistemologies of nature. They differ from the great scriptural religions primarily in being oral rather than textual, communally transmitted rather than institutionally governed, place-based rather than universal-proselytizing, and focused on relationship with the local cosmos rather than transcendence of it. Shamanism in these traditions is inseparable from the fabric of daily life, healing practice, and ecological knowledge. Anthropologist Robin Wall Kimmerer's work on Potawatomi botanical knowledge, and Wade Davis's documentation of Amazonian plant wisdom, illustrate that these traditions encode millennia of empirical observation in their ritual and cosmological structures.
The sacred is not found above the world — it is found within the world, in every stone, every drum-beat, every flame. All traditions, in their deepest forms, know this. — paraphrase of Rudolf Otto, The Idea of the Holy (1917), in dialogue with shamanic thought鲁道夫·奥托《论神圣》(1917年)与萨满思想的对话性改写
For at least 40,000 years, humans have sought to speak with the unseen. Shamanism is not a single religion with a founder or creed — it is a family of techniques and cosmologies that arose independently across the world, survived persecution and suppression, and continues to evolve today. This is the story of that survival.
The archaeological record offers tantalizing glimpses of shamanic practice reaching back to the Upper Paleolithic. The painted caves of Lascaux (c. 17,000 BCE) and Chauvet (c. 36,000 BCE) contain animal figures, hybrid human-animal beings, and handprints that many researchers — including David Lewis-Williams in The Mind in the Cave (2002) — interpret as the products of ritual altered states: entoptic imagery, spirit journeys, and the shaman-as-animal-transformer. The burial at Hilazon Tachtit in Israel (c. 12,000 BCE), excavated by Natalie Munro and Leore Grosman, contained the remains of an elderly woman surrounded by fifty tortoise shells, a human foot, eagle wings, and a leopard pelvis — a burial assemblage consistent with a shaman of great standing. The oldest known probable shaman burial dates to at least the early Epipaleolithic period.
As human societies grew more complex through the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, shamanic practice did not disappear — it diversified. In Mesopotamia, Egypt, and early China, the roles of priest, diviner, healer, and oracle differentiated and became institutionalized. Yet the core shamanic functions persisted within or alongside the emerging state religions. In Shang Dynasty China (c. 1600–1046 BCE), the wu (巫) — spirit specialists, some of whom may have been women — performed rain rituals, divination with oracle bones, and healing ceremonies that bear structural similarity to Siberian shamanism. In ancient Mesopotamia, the āšipu (exorcist-healer) and bārû (diviner) occupied specialist roles continuous with archaic shamanic functions. Greece's oracle complexes at Delphi and Dodona maintained an ecstatic, spirit-mediated form of prophecy well into the classical period.
The Middle Ages brought deliberate suppression. The Christianization of Europe from late antiquity onward brought intensifying pressure on local healing, divination, and spirit-communication practices. The Canon Episcopi (c. 900 CE) described women who believed they flew by night with Diana as suffering diabolical illusions; later the Malleus Maleficarum (1486) systematized the prosecution of alleged witches — many of whom, anthropologists now argue, practiced residual folk-shamanic traditions. The Siberian and Central Asian shamans encountered by Russian imperial expansion from the 16th century onward faced both Orthodox Christian missionary pressure and, later, Soviet-era criminalization. Soviet ethnographers documented Evenki, Buryat, Yakut, and Chukchi shamanism in the 1920s–1930s even as Soviet policy actively suppressed it: shamans were arrested, drums burned, ceremonies banned. The suppression was brutal but incomplete. Practitioners hid, adapted, and endured.
Across the Americas, colonial encounter brought catastrophic disruption to indigenous shamanic traditions. From the 16th century, Spanish missionary campaigns systematically suppressed the practices of Mesoamerican, Andean, and Amazonian peoples, burning codices and persecuting diviners, healers, and ceremonial specialists. The widespread use of ayahuasca, peyote, and psilocybin mushrooms in sacred contexts was outlawed. Yet indigenous communities preserved their traditions through syncretic adaptation — weaving Catholic imagery into shamanic ceremony, maintaining dual vocabularies, and transmitting knowledge within family lineages. In the 20th century, renewed indigenous rights movements brought partial legal and cultural protection to many traditions.
Shamanism has been suppressed, forbidden, and declared dead more than once. Each time, it has returned — because the questions it asks never stopped being human questions. — Roberte Hamayon, anthropologist, Shamanism: A Practice That Resists Disappearance罗贝尔特·哈马扬,人类学家,《萨满:一种抵抗消亡的实践》
The twentieth century saw shamanism flow in two directions at once: indigenous communities fighting to preserve living traditions against colonial suppression, and Western seekers reaching across cultural boundaries to adapt ancient techniques for modern life. Both currents carry genuine value — and genuine risk.
For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, shamanic practice was actively suppressed. Soviet anti-religious campaigns in Siberia imprisoned or executed hundreds of Evenki, Buryat, and Yakut shamans. Christian missionaries across the Americas, Africa, and Oceania worked systematically to replace indigenous ceremonial life. In North America, the U.S. government banned many Native ceremonies outright until 1978, when the American Indian Religious Freedom Act was passed. The interruption of transmission was often catastrophic: techniques, songs, plant knowledge, and cosmological maps that had been passed from teacher to apprentice over generations were silenced within a single lifetime.
Against this backdrop, indigenous revival movements emerged with quiet determination. Across Siberia, after the Soviet collapse, communities sought out the last surviving elders and began the painstaking work of reconstruction. In North America, the American Indian Movement (founded 1968) and subsequent activism created space for the resurgence of ceremony, language, and land-based practice. In Mongolia, shamanic associations have grown significantly since the 1990s. In South Korea, the government formally recognized musok (무속, shamanic tradition) as an intangible cultural heritage in the 1960s, and the mudang priestess tradition continues to be practiced and studied. These are not nostalgic recreations — they are living communities asserting the right to their own spiritual inheritance.
Simultaneously, a parallel movement developed in the West. The anthropologist Michael Harner (1929–2018) — who had conducted fieldwork among the Shuar people of the Ecuadorian Amazon — proposed in his 1980 book The Way of the Shaman that certain shamanic techniques, particularly the use of rhythmic drumming to induce altered states, were broadly cross-cultural and could be taught outside their original cultural contexts. He called this distilled framework «core shamanism» and founded the Foundation for Shamanic Studies to disseminate it. Harner's approach was explicit about its selectivity: it deliberately stripped away culture-specific elements to create something more universally accessible. This honesty is significant — Harner did not claim to be transmitting any particular living tradition, but rather a set of techniques.
The debate that has grown around neoshamanism and the wider «New Age» adoption of indigenous practices is not simply about authenticity — it is about power, economics, and harm. Indigenous scholars and community leaders have consistently identified several distinct concerns. First, practices severed from their original cosmological, ecological, and community context risk losing the meaning that makes them functional and safe — a healing ceremony is not merely its outer form. Second, when outsiders charge money to teach or perform practices belonging to living traditions without community consent, that constitutes cultural extractivism: profit flows outward while communities that maintained those traditions through repression and poverty receive nothing. Third, appropriation trivializes ongoing struggles — when a tradition that was illegal two generations ago is now sold as a weekend workshop, the disparity is not merely ironic but actively harmful to advocacy for indigenous rights.
Academic research has contributed a third strand. Ethnobotanists, anthropologists, cognitive scientists, and psychologists have approached shamanism as a subject of rigorous study: Mircea Eliade's comparative morphology (contested but foundational), Roger Walsh's phenomenological surveys, Winkelman's neurological analyses of shamanic states of consciousness, and the burgeoning field of psychedelic research that has re-engaged questions shamanic traditions long addressed. This scholarship — when conducted with genuine community partnership and proper consent — can support indigenous advocacy, document endangered knowledge, and illuminate the deep roots of human consciousness. When conducted extractively, it replicates the same problems as commercial neoshamanism.
「We are not a relic. We are a living people with living knowledge. The right to practice our own ceremonies is not a cultural curiosity — it is a matter of survival.」 — Spirit of the Lakota Declaration on Plastic Shamans, 1993 · paraphrased position拉科塔「塑料萨满」宣言精神,1993年 · 意译立场
As digital networks, artificial intelligence, and ecological crisis reshape the human world, an ancient tradition finds itself at a strange crossroads. What does shamanism have to offer the twenty-first century — and what might the twenty-first century do to shamanism?
Shamanism has survived every previous transformation of human civilization — the Neolithic transition to agriculture, the rise of empires, the spread of world religions, colonialism, and industrial modernity. In each case it adapted, went underground, was suppressed, was revived, or quietly continued where outside forces could not reach. The question is not whether shamanic thought will survive the digital age, but in what form, at what cost, and whether the wisdom embedded in it remains legible after the journey.
Three currents define the contemporary moment. First, a growing ecological awareness that mirrors shamanic teachings: the recognition that land, animals, and ecosystems are not passive resources but active, entangled communities that human beings are embedded within, not separate from. Second, a mental health crisis in industrialized societies that has renewed interest in community-based healing, ritual, embodied practice, and altered states — each central to shamanic traditions. Third, rapid technological change that simultaneously offers new tools for preservation, connection, and experience, while also threatening to reduce living traditions to aesthetics, entertainment, or therapeutic products stripped of their relational and ecological roots.
What ancient wisdom remains genuinely valuable? Scholars and practitioners consistently point to four enduring contributions. Reciprocity with nature: the insistence that human beings are participants in, not masters of, the living world. Community healing: the understanding that illness, grief, and disorientation are social as well as personal, and require collective as well as individual response. Attention to inner states: the development of refined techniques for navigating dreams, visions, altered consciousness, and symbolic experience. Meaning-making: the embedding of individual life within larger narratives — cosmological, ecological, ancestral — that confer purpose and orient action. None of these require belief in spirits as literal entities; they are structural features of a worldview that addresses real human needs.
What is at risk? The gravest danger is decontextualization: the extraction of elements from living traditions — the drum, the journey, the plant medicine — without the kinship networks, ecological relationships, apprenticeship systems, and moral frameworks that give them meaning. A technique borrowed from its community is not the same thing as the technique within its community. The second danger is commodification: when healing ceremonies become retreat packages, when sacred songs appear in ambient playlists, when symbols become fonts and tattoos, their relational weight is not automatically transferred. The third is digital substitution: the risk that a VR headset replaces not just the logistics of travel but the encounter with real otherness — the wind, the cold, the animal, the elder — that the tradition was designed to produce.
The question is not whether we will carry the old fire forward. The question is whether we will still know, in the carrying, what it was for. — A reflection on tradition and transformation关于传统与转化的沉思
Every culture, every ritual, every symbol, every spirit animal — gathered into one living web. This atlas ties the twenty themes of this platform into a single connected field, revealing the hidden threads that run across the entire world of shamanism.
Shamanism is not a single doctrine or a single people's practice. It is a vast, distributed intelligence — a set of recurring patterns that appeared independently in Siberia and the Amazon, on the Arctic tundra and the African savanna, in Paleolithic caves and twenty-first-century clinics. What the knowledge graph below makes visible is the deep structure underlying all of these expressions: the same animals appearing across unconnected continents as spirit guides; the same cosmic axis (World Tree, axis mundi, sacred mountain) anchoring cosmologies on every inhabited landmass; the same threshold experiences (fasting, drumming, plant medicine, dreaming) opening gateways to the spirit world.
The seven node categories — Culture, Ritual, Symbol, Animal, Myth, Place, and Period — correspond to the seven dimensions through which shamanism can be understood. No single dimension is primary. The bear is simultaneously a zoological fact, a ritual participant, a mythic ancestor, and a symbol of transformation. Siberia is simultaneously a geographical region, a cultural heartland, and a living archive of some of the planet's oldest continuous shamanic traditions. The graph allows you to move freely among all of these dimensions, following the connections wherever they lead.

Shamanism is not merely a religion — it is one of humanity's oldest attempts to understand nature, consciousness, healing, symbolism, community, and the mystery of existence. The questions the shaman asked ten thousand years ago in a firelit forest are still the questions we ask today.
